Irkçılık ve "Hayvan Severlik"- Racism and "Animal Lovers"

Racism, Xenophobia and “Animal Lovers”

Animals mark their territory and don’t let “strangers” enter the area. The borders of the territory might be wide or narrow depending on the availability of food. The instinct to continue ones species is the motive behind the concept of border. The part of the population that can survive with the available food resource is a part of the community- the clan- the rest is stranger. The moment the strangers attempt to enter the territory they are driven away by fight, borders are protected.

Racism is a reflex that is familiar to human clans before the establishment of national societies. Everybody living out of the borders is a stranger and therefore a potential enemy. It is sacred to protect the borders.

Recently, the xenophobic instincts are noteworthy in the animal lover community in Turkey. The endeavors of foreigners to protect animals in Turkey are reacted with suspicion. “ What have these foreigners to do with our animals? Are they missionaries? Are they after profit from our animals? Are they selling our animals to labs in Europe or to fur factories in China? They should take their hands off our animals. Turkish animals belong to Turkish people.” Such accusations, denunciations, assaults and cheap rhetoric.

Lately, the international animal protection organization PETA Germany has also got its share from these assaults after it organized many campaigns to end cruelty towards animals in Turkey .

PETA’s campaigns for Turkish dogs were protested by some animal protection organizations in Turkey. The slogan is the same: “ PETA should go and mind its own business. They are defending euthanasia anyway. PETA is humiliating our national pride.”

The meaning of this reaction is clear: We can defend the rights of our animals ourselves. When foreigners react to what is happening here, we all unite in defence: “Who said that our animals are treated cruelly? All mighty Turks have the power to take care of their animals.”

Maybe there are reasons in our history for this strange moody hypocritical state of mind. For instance maybe this mental state can be explained by the trauma of transformation from an empire ruling on three continents to a national state. This is another topic that extends beyond the scope of our subject here.

What we want to point to here is that this strange reaction is the reflection of a mentality that rejects to realize globalization. Ethical and juridical norms are international and Turkey has accepted the superiority of international juridical norms by the international agreements it has signed. For instance, as it is legitimate to protest the practice of “recm” as a kind of violence towards women, or to protest murdering of animals for fur making in China or to protest humane tragedy in Gazza,, it is the right of every citizen of the world to protest violence towards animals in Turkey.

If we don’t approve the violence against animals in Turkey we should use our right for civil struggle to end it. Even if it is not the violence but it being known what is making us uncomfortable, still there is no choice but to struggle to stop it. We no more have the chance to hide in a closed society. It is not possible to prevent the world know what is happening in one corner of this world. To deny what is known or to try to hide behind excuses such as
“ they are also doing the same” is childish and unacceptable.

The honorable position is for us to fight to stop cruelty towards animals. It is not the fact that it is known but the fact itself that is humiliating for us.

Who can ask the nationality of a human being who cries for a dying dog dumped in the forest?

Hayvanlar Meta Değildir- Animals are not Merchandise

http://sahibindencomboykot.blogspot.com sitesinin www.sahibinden.com adlı siteye karşı başlattığı protesto kampanyasını destekliyoruz. Hayvanların ticaret amacıyla üretilmelerine, ticaret metai olarak kullanılmasına karşıyız. Hele, barınakların, terkedilmis, istenmeyen hayvanlarla dolu olduğu bir ülkede, sorumlu tavrın pet shoplardan ya da üreticilerden değil barınaklardan hayvan alınması olduğuna inanıyoruz. www.sahibindenccom sitesi sahibi Müge Seymen’den, evcil hayvan satışı ve üretimini desteklemek yerine, barınaklardaki hayvanların sahiplendirilmesi icin yardımcı olmasını diliyoruz.

Animals are not Merchandise

We support the protest campaign started by the web site http://sahibindencomboykot.blogspot.com against the site www.sahibinden.com where pet animals are sold like tradable goods. We are against animals to be reproduced for trade purposes and for them to be regarded as merchandise. Furthermore, in a country like Turkey, where the shelters are full of animals dumped by their owners, adoption from shelters should be promoted. We wish Müge Seymen, the owner of the site www.sahibinden.com to help rehome animals at shelters rather than promoting reproduction of animals for trade purposes.
