KISIRLAŞTIRMA EKIBI LAPSEKİ'DE- NR TEAM NOW IN LAPSEKİ

NEUTER AND RELEASE TEAM AT LAPSEKİ

Lapseki is a small town of Canakkale Province with population of 11.000 in 2012. The population increases in summer because it is a summer resort visited by domestic tourists. The main reason for  the stray animal problem there is  that the municipality has no veterinery team to do nueter and release.
Our neutering team headed by Veterinary Murat Bekhan visited Lapseki twice in January and February, upon the invitation of Lapseki municipality. In the first visit in January which lasted 3 days, the team neutered 210 stray dogs, of which 141 was female and 69 male. In the second visit in February, the number of dogs neutered was 195, of which 147 was female and 48 male.
We met some devoted animal lovers in Lapseki of among whom we will never forget Nilufer Hanim who looked after stray animals with great compassion. Thanks to the protection of animal lovers in the town, all of the animals brought for neutering were in good health.
We wish that Lapseki municipality will employ a veterinary and continue with neuter and release.

Our greatest thank is for Dutch Actiezwerfhonden Organisation for supporting this project by financing all costs including rabies vaccination, all materials, medication used at operation and salaries of some employers. We  are grateful to Dutch Stichting Buitenlandse Asielen for donation of operation equipment sets and autoclave.  We also thank our friend  Veterinary Murat Bekhan for organising this project and heading the veterinary team, doing operation sometimes 10-12 hours a day, volunterily.  We also thank Lapseki Municipality for being aware of the importance of neuter and release and inviting us for a start up in the city.

SHKD EKİBİ ÜÇÜNCÜ DEFA MUDURNU'DA-SHKD TEAM AT MUDURNU FOR THE THIRD TIME

SHKD Team’s Third Visit to Mudurnu

Mudurnu is a small town in Bolu province which is at four hour drive from Istanbul. SHKD team had first visited Mudurnu in October 2016 and had neutered 329 dogs and 91 cats. The team was amazed at the cooperation of the inhabitants who brought dogs and cats that they looked after. Most of the animals operated then were well fed and healthy most probably because of the chicken farms near the city. Second visit to Mudurnu was in early 2017.

At this third visit to the town in March 2019, SHKD team led by Vet. Murat Bekhan, neutered and vaccinated 187 dogs and 2 cats. 154 of dogs were female and 33 male, 103 younger than 1 year old, 53 younger than 3 years old and 29 older than 3. 82 dogs were pregnant. There was no distemper or parva, no handicapped dog. The inhabitants of the town cooperated with our project by bringing dogs and cats as was observed before.

We thank Stichting Actiezwerfhonden for full financial support of this project,
Stichting Buitenlandse Asielen for donation of operation equipment sets and autoclave.

SHKD Ekibi Tavşanlı'da- SHKD Team in Tavsanlı

SHKD Team in Tavsanlı

Tavsanlı is a small typical Agean town with population of 62000 in the city of Kütahya.  Stray dog population is not controlled in Tavsanli as is the case in many cities of Turkey. In the past,  stray animals were taken to the city of Kütahya for neutering but now the municipality has decided to built its own rehabilitation center.

During their stay for 3 days SHKD veterineries neutered and vaccinated 187 dogs, 144 of which is female and 43 male. Seven veterinaries from the district were trained for the "key hole" techique among which one will be employed full time by the municipality to continue with the neutering operations.

SHKD team took all the operation equipment including the operation table, autoclav etc with it since the furbishing of the operation room was not yet complete. The autoclav in the picture above was donated by Dutch Strichting Buitenlandse Asielen to be used at netering projects. We are grateful to them for this. And we thank Dutch Actiezwerfhonden for sponsoring the project. Without their support our neutering project wouldn't have been realized.

SHKD Actiezwerfhonden Project in Erdek

SHKD Actiezwerfhonden Team in Erdek

Erdek is a small town with population around 34.000 in 2010 in the south of Marmara reqion. It is a domestic tourist destination where stray animals are cared for and fed in summer times when the population increases considerably with domestic tourists and suffer in winter with less people to care for them. There is no veterinary working for Erdek municipality for the time being. They are planning to employ one in the near future. If that happens we have given them our word for training the veterinary in Istanbul when he starts working.

SHKD team visited Erdek for  “neuter and release” project.  They neutered a total of 296 animals, 246 of which is dogs and 50 cats. 193 of dogs and 48 of cats were female. Most of the animals were healthy.

Four handicapped dogs, three of them with one leg amputated and one partly paralyzed in the back legs were brought to SHKD shelter because they couldn’t be released and Erdek shelter conditions were inconvenient for them to spend the rest of their lives at.  The will have more space and freedom at SHKD forest shelter.

We are grateful to Actiezwerfhonden for supporting all financial expenditures of this project.

SHKD-Acitezwerfhonden Kısırlaştırma Projesi Mudurnu’da

Mudurnu, Karadeniz Bölgesi, Bolu iline bağlı  küçük bir kasabadır. Istanbul’a 4 saat uzaklıktadır.

SHKD Actiezwerfhonden Neutering Project in Mudurnu

Mudurnu is a small town and district in Bolu province which is 4hours drive from Istanbul. The town has been selected as a Historic Preservation District by UNESCO.  The town attracts tourist with its historical sites and thermal springs.

In early October SHKD team was in Mudurnu with the sponsorship of Dutch Actiezwerfhonden Organisation for the joint “neuter and release” project. Haytap volunteers helped municipality workers to catch dogs from streets. People from the town and from surrounding villages were very eager to participate in the project and brought dogs and cats they are looking after. As is familier from other cities of Turkey, they brought especially female animals because they believed that males don’t need to be sterilized. Most of the cats and dogs were healthy due most probably to the chicken farms near the city.  The mayor was very informed about the neuter and release project, believed in it. He was enthusiastic about the work and visited the team several times during operations.

SHKD team of 2 vets, one vet technician and one assistant neutered 329 dogs and 91 cats and trained two part time working municipality vets about “key hole” technique.

We are thankful to Actiezwerfhonden for their full financial support and to the mayor and citizens of Mudurnu for their cooperation.

 SHKD-ACTIEZWERFHONDEN NEUTERING CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

  Last Stop: Gaziantep-Kilis

This time we were at Gaziantep, upon the request of CAHIDE (Organisation for Improving Life of Living Things). Gaziantep, which is one of the industrial and agricultural centers of the country   is a big city near the Syrian border of Turkey.  The founder, director and sponsor of CAHIDE, Dr. Cengiz Bayram is a medical doctor who owns two private hospitals in the city. He decided to return part of the money he earned in this city to its dogs and signed a protocol with Gaziantep municipality to run all animal welfare and population control duties on behalf of them. For some time they worked at the municipality shelter then decided that kennel type shelters are prison camps for dogs and they bought a 40km2 land to build an open shelter like that of SHKD. Their shelter named Karakiz is being run by a team of salaried workers and volunteers since 2010.

As we went to Gaziantep, we decided to help the strays of  the neighboring city which is Kilis on the border of Syria. The municipality vet there was only capable of neutering male dogs and 110 female dogs were kept at the shelter unneutered. Actiezwerfhonden and Kilis Municipality signed a protocol for  110 dogs to be brought to CAHIDE for neutering and be released afterwards.

SHKD veterinary team of 3 veterinaries and one assistant headed by Vet Murat Bekhan neutered successfully a total of 317 animals 166 of which is dogs and 151 cats during their stay in Gaziantep for 3 days.  Four vets from Gaziantep and one vet from Kilis municipality were trained for “key hole” technique. 85 of the dogs that were brought from Kilis were released in the area around Karakiz shelter to be fed by CAHIDE and 25 healthy dogs were sent back to Kilis to be released in the city so as to protect the territory. All animals were vaccinated for rabies, given antibiotics and long term pain killers. All animals were released after a post operative care of seven days.

The team returned home very tired this time, for having worked overtime for 3 days but they were all happy for having helped 317 animals, for knowing a great animal lover Dr. CEngiz Bayram and with the hope that Neuter and Release will be continued by the 5 vets they had trained.

This neutering campaign couldn’t have been realized without the full financial support of Actiezwefhonden.  We thank Linda Tall and all Actiezwerfhonden donators for their generosity and support.

Ayvalık Seferberliği Devam Ediyor- Ayvalık Campaign Continues

Ayvalik’a Kısırlaştırma Seferleri Devam Ediyor

2013 yılında başlayan Ayvalık kısırlaştırma seferberliğimiz devam ediyor.  Üc yıldır Ayvalık’a toplam 12 sefer yaptık.

Neutering Campaign in Ayvalık Continues

Our neutering campaign in Ayvalik which started in 2013 continued with the 12th visit to the city in May 2015. SHKD team has neutered an average of 150-200 dogs in each stay. As a result, including our tours to Cunda right before Ayvalık,  the  number of animal neutered reached 1864 dogs and 1274 cats in total. Our campaign in Ayvalik started with neutering dogs at the shelter, in later visits animals in the city and surrounding districts were neutered.  Finally we started to work in the garbage damp which is a real challenge because it is more difficult to catch dogs living there.

During our last visit to Ayvalik in May, we neutered 151 dogs and 9 cats, 1 dog was operated for his hernia, 2 dogs’ arms were amputated, one dog’s breast tumor was removed, 1 cat’s eye operated and 2 dogs’ tails were amputated.

We owe gratitude to Stichting ActieZwerfhonden (StraydogsCampaign Foundation)  for sponsoring this huge project and SHKD veterinary team headed by Vet Murat Bekhan for their devoted voluntary work. Our aim is to end animal suffering by controlling their number and also to show to the public and municipalities that neutering is the only effective solution to the problem of excess stray population.

SHKD Tatvan'da- SHKD in Tatvan

SHKD in Tatvan for Education Seminar
Tatvan was one of the most difficult cities In Turkey until our friend from SHKD, Veterinary Technician Ömer Atış started to work for Tatvan Municipality Veterinary Department a few years ago. He initiated a remarkable change in the city. The municipality started to implement neuter and release, began feeding stray animals in streets and allocated teams to neuter and vaccinate dogs that are looked after at military bases by the border. None of these would be possible without the generous donation of Dutch foundation Actiezwerfhonden to furbish the veterinary clinic of the Tatvan Municipality. We pay our gratitute to them for their support.

On April 27, Vet. Murat Bekhan from SHKD was in Tatvan to give a seminar on stray dogs upon the invitation of the Tatvan municipality. Tatvan is a city where according to the dominant Islamic sect Scafizm, dogs are regarded as dirty and untouchable as such. As a result the behavior of children towards dogs are not very friendly. The Tatvan municipality allocated cars to bring a total of 1000  primary school students from 4 different schools to the municipality cultural center. The seminar was very successful and effective. The pictures show how the students enjoyed themselves. We also had the mayor’s word that they will continue with the sessions.

Batman'da Kısırlaştırma- Neutering in Batman

Projenin tek sponsoru Licht Blicke fur Tiere e.V derneğine,  Batman’daki kısırlaştırma çalışmaları için bağış yapan Alman hayvanseverlere, projeye öncülük yapan  Banu Knüppel’in şahsında teşekkür ediyoruz.

A neutering project has been launched in Batman by the initiation  of Banu Knueppel the director of  Licht Blicke für Tiere e.V. from Germany.   Veterinary technician Omer Atış and Dr. Damla Sahin from the animal protection organization “ Bir Damla Hayat” based in Bitlis organized a team of voluntary vets and  asistants and went to Batman to realize the project.  They worked for two full days and neutered 61 dogs collected by the municipality team.

We are grateful to Banu Knueppel, director of Licht Blicke für Tiere e.V. for her devotion to save Turkish dogs and the German animal lovers for being the sole sponsor of this project. We also owe wholehearted thanks to “Bir Damla Hayat” team for working  devotedly to implement it.
We wish the neuter and release practice to be continued by the Batman municipality vets as promised and the practice to be a model for other cities.

Cunda-Ayvalık Projesine Devam-Continuing with the Cunda Ayvalık Project

Cunda kedilerinin tahminen %95’i kısırlaştırılmış oldu böylece.

Cunda is a small town in the Eagan coast of Turkey. Beside for its natural beauty   it was also famous for its  large population- estimated to be around 1000- of  cats of all size and age  living in the streets of Cunda.  They were living in misery with most of the cats ill and not able to find enough food especially in winter when the summer inhabitants leave the town. Animal lovers in Cunda were trying to have them neutered but it was not possible for them to neuter all. Cunda needed a real neutering campaign and it had to be visited more than once. It was an advantage that  the town is situated on an island with a narrow connection to the main land. We could control the number and make Cunda a pilot project. With the full financial support of the Dutch Actiezwerfhonden Foundation we started the NR project. SHKD team went to Cunda 8 times and neutered and released 842 cats and 132 dogs. We estimate to have neutered approximately 95 % of cats in Cunda. Nowadays it is hard to see a cat on the streets without the earmark showing she is neutered. Volunteers from the town headed by Gulnihal Balcı helped the team by collecting cats, making an announcement for inhabitants to bring stray cats in their street for neutering, and they helped in postoperative care. The heroes of the campaign are naturally  vet Murat Bekhan and SHKD team with their  altruistic work ethic and expertise in key hole technique which enables them to do so many operations with %100 success.

As the team was visiting Cunda periodically, a call for help came from Ayvalik- the city which the town of Cunda is a part of-. The German organization with whom the Ayvalik municipality worked for many years had left and there had been no neutering done after that. Many dogs at the shelter were waiting to be neutered and released. Actiezwefhonden accepted our request to help Ayvalik dogs as well. The Ayvalik municipality accepted to to help the project by collecting dogs,  taking  care of them in the postoperative period and releasing them afterwards. Gulnihal Balci who is now employed by Actiezwerfhonden for the project is going to coordinate the work. SHKD team went to Ayvalik 3 times and neutered 400 dogs in total. Actiezwerfhonden covered all the financial expenses. During the last mission in Ayvalık,  Robert Smith, director of SHKD also visited the team. He was impressed with the work and offered to pay the salary of a vet technician to help with the medical treatment and care of dogs at the shelter for 5 months.

Our aim is for Cunda- Ayvalik project to be model for all the municipalities of Turkey. We want  to show that killing stray animals or dumping them out of the city is not a solution but neuter and return is.  Naturally our main goal is to  end the misery of animals in Turkey.

We are grateful to  Actiezwefhonden and all its donators and director Linda Taal  for supporting our struggle to promote neuter and return in Turkey.

Kısırlaştırma Seferberliğine Devam-Continuing With Neuter-Return

Continuing with Neutering Project: Cunda-Ayvalık-Manyas
SHKD-Actiezwerhonden neutering project is continuing. SHKD team has  been to Cunda for the seventh time and a total of 717 cats and 132 dogs have been neutered. Now almost all cats of Cunda are sterilized. We plan to make a final excursion to Cunda before summer. Our first visit to Cunda was initiated by Haytap’s request. Without the active help of volunteers in Cunda we couldn’t have reached such a result. They  collected stray cats before the arrival of the team, made a call to all the inhabitants to bring cats and dogs at their streets for sterilization and helped in postoperative care.
As we were visiting Cunda for the fourth time,  Ayvalik Municipality requested  that we also pay a visit to their shelter  as part of the sterilization project. There were 100  fertile dogs at the shelter waiting to be neutered. There was no veterinary, no money for sterilization. SHKD team went there and neutered 100 dogs. Dogs were released back to streets after being sterilized. We had given a hand in having them gain their freedom again as well as helping for population control.
Later, Timur Ugan from Haytap called us. He told us that Manyas Municipality was also in trouble. There were fertile dogs at the shelter waiting to be neutered. There was no vet, no money for this purpose in municipality budget. SHKD team went there and sterilized 161 dogs and 8 cats. Now the dogs at the shelter are living at the fruit gardens around the shelter freely.
Unfortunately many municipalities in Turkey don’t have resources they can allocate for sterilization of stray animals. Some are aware how crucial this is for controlling the number of stray animals and ask for our help. Some still try to “control” the population by brutal methods of killing. Although they know this will not help, they think they are saving the day. However, they could have solved the problem with the money they have been spending for poisoning teams up to now.
First we thank  SHKD’s vet Murat Bekhan  for his altruistic voluntary work which sometimes reaches 12 hours a day, nearly with no break and SHKD employee Huseyin Yildirim who is assisting him and to Haytap volunteers who help the team in every city we go.  Needless to say, none of this could be achieved without the financial support of Actiezwerfhonden. We are grateful to Linda Taal, director of Actiezwerfhonden and all the donators for having a place in their heart for miserable stray animals of Turkey.

Cunda'nın Kedileri- The Cats of Cunda

THE CATS OF CUNDA

One day Nesrin Citirik called us saying, “I am in Cunda now. The population of cats here is incredible. There are cats everywhere. I have not seen so many cats together in my life. Most of them are sick or pregnant. SHKD, please organize a neutering tour here.” We had to first find financial support. We applied to Actiezwerfhonden from Netherlands. They had supported most of our neutering projects in the past. We told them about the desperate situation and that there are trustworthy volunteers who promised to collect cats and to continue the project after the majority of animals are neutered by SHKD. Actiezwerfhonden accepted to finance the project.  The fact that Cunda is an island made it a promising pilot for a successful project.

SHKD team went to Cunda in 2013, five times, in March, April, two times in May and in November. In the first four visits, a total of 343 cats and 88 dogs were neutered. After the team left Cunda, a local vet, trained by the team,  neutered 45 cats with the medicine and equipment SHKD team left to her. After giving a break in summer because of the weather conditions, the team visited Cunda for the fifth time in November. This time The Marchig Trust supported the project and three  vets neutered 127 cats and 19 dogs in one day. Thus the total number of cats and dogs neutered reached 471 and 106 respectively.

This result was achieved thanks to the local animal lovers and volunteers who carried all cats that they could catch. Some people brought cats in their streets in laundry baskets covered with a piece of wood, with stone on top. Now nearly all cats in the region where restaurants are –the seaside-   are neutered and healthy. We are planning to make two visits to Cunda in December. Our aim is for Cunda to be an exemplary pilot town for the success of the “neuter-vaccinate-release” project.

We are grateful to Actiezwerfhonden and Marchig Trust for their financial support and to all the volunteers and animal lovers of Cunda who worked hard so that the team could neuter the maximum amount of animals in their short stay.  Needless to say this project wouldn’t be achieved if we didn’t have the most talented, experienced vets who worked for 12 hours without giving a break and with a 100% success rate.

BEYKOZ'DA YENIDEN KATLİAM - MASSACRE IN BEYKOZ AGAIN

MASSACRE IN BEYKOZ
In 2008, Beykoz Municipality carried out a big dog massacre by dumping all of around 1000 dogs at the shelter in the forest. – pictures and information about this catastrophe are in 2008 entries of this blog-. Then a new mayor, Yücel Çelikbilek was elected and  gave us his word saying, “Animals are weak creatures, they are entrusted on us by God,  it is our duty to look after and protect them.”  We trusted his word.
Now as the elections are approaching, the neutered, vaccinated, human friendly dogs that are looked after by inhabitants are disappearing. They started “cleansing” with dogs that lived across the Sport Academy in Anadolu Hisari. Dogs who lived there for a long time, some very old, some young, Peri, Nazi, Bodur… 21 dogs disappeared from the area. Then dogs in Kanlica disappeared, then those in Cubuklu, Beykoz Center, Kacavık, Kaymak Donduran disappeared.
They were dumped in forests and by highways, far away from the city. They are now shocked in fear, hungry and thirsty, far away from their territory, their home.  Winter is coming. There is no chance for them to find any food in where they are dumped.  A slow and terrible death is inevitable.
Perhaps there is no other country which deals with the stray dog problem in the worst and despicable way possible like Turkey.  Employ manpower to do neutering or give the neutering duty to a subcontractor established for that purpose, so act as if you are doing neuter and return, then dump dogs that are neutered out of the city to die there  a terrible slow death.
We believed him when Mayor Yucel Celikbilek said “ Animals are entrusted on us by God”.  He is  a religious man. We thought that since he had faith that God created all universe for men, he should  believe that this puts the responsibility of  protecting  all universe on men’s shoulder.  We were wrong.
The massacre in Hayirsizada in 1910 is not a historical incidence, it has been repeated since then over and over again. In 1910, all of about 80.000 animals in Istanbul,  dumped in the isolated island of Hayirsizada died by killing each other from hunger. The inhabitants of Istanbul believed that the Balkan War that fallowed was a catastrophe that was a result of this cruelty done to animals. But the animal massacre has continued ever since, and is still continuing now.
This massacre will continue until the sentient people of this city understand that keeping silent is to comply with the crime and   raise their voices for these innocent souls. We hope this day is not very far.
