Cunda'nın Kedileri- The Cats of Cunda

THE CATS OF CUNDA

One day Nesrin Citirik called us saying, “I am in Cunda now. The population of cats here is incredible. There are cats everywhere. I have not seen so many cats together in my life. Most of them are sick or pregnant. SHKD, please organize a neutering tour here.” We had to first find financial support. We applied to Actiezwerfhonden from Netherlands. They had supported most of our neutering projects in the past. We told them about the desperate situation and that there are trustworthy volunteers who promised to collect cats and to continue the project after the majority of animals are neutered by SHKD. Actiezwerfhonden accepted to finance the project.  The fact that Cunda is an island made it a promising pilot for a successful project.

SHKD team went to Cunda in 2013, five times, in March, April, two times in May and in November. In the first four visits, a total of 343 cats and 88 dogs were neutered. After the team left Cunda, a local vet, trained by the team,  neutered 45 cats with the medicine and equipment SHKD team left to her. After giving a break in summer because of the weather conditions, the team visited Cunda for the fifth time in November. This time The Marchig Trust supported the project and three  vets neutered 127 cats and 19 dogs in one day. Thus the total number of cats and dogs neutered reached 471 and 106 respectively.

This result was achieved thanks to the local animal lovers and volunteers who carried all cats that they could catch. Some people brought cats in their streets in laundry baskets covered with a piece of wood, with stone on top. Now nearly all cats in the region where restaurants are –the seaside-   are neutered and healthy. We are planning to make two visits to Cunda in December. Our aim is for Cunda to be an exemplary pilot town for the success of the “neuter-vaccinate-release” project.

We are grateful to Actiezwerfhonden and Marchig Trust for their financial support and to all the volunteers and animal lovers of Cunda who worked hard so that the team could neuter the maximum amount of animals in their short stay.  Needless to say this project wouldn’t be achieved if we didn’t have the most talented, experienced vets who worked for 12 hours without giving a break and with a 100% success rate.

BEYKOZ'DA YENIDEN KATLİAM - MASSACRE IN BEYKOZ AGAIN

MASSACRE IN BEYKOZ
In 2008, Beykoz Municipality carried out a big dog massacre by dumping all of around 1000 dogs at the shelter in the forest. – pictures and information about this catastrophe are in 2008 entries of this blog-. Then a new mayor, Yücel Çelikbilek was elected and  gave us his word saying, “Animals are weak creatures, they are entrusted on us by God,  it is our duty to look after and protect them.”  We trusted his word.
Now as the elections are approaching, the neutered, vaccinated, human friendly dogs that are looked after by inhabitants are disappearing. They started “cleansing” with dogs that lived across the Sport Academy in Anadolu Hisari. Dogs who lived there for a long time, some very old, some young, Peri, Nazi, Bodur… 21 dogs disappeared from the area. Then dogs in Kanlica disappeared, then those in Cubuklu, Beykoz Center, Kacavık, Kaymak Donduran disappeared.
They were dumped in forests and by highways, far away from the city. They are now shocked in fear, hungry and thirsty, far away from their territory, their home.  Winter is coming. There is no chance for them to find any food in where they are dumped.  A slow and terrible death is inevitable.
Perhaps there is no other country which deals with the stray dog problem in the worst and despicable way possible like Turkey.  Employ manpower to do neutering or give the neutering duty to a subcontractor established for that purpose, so act as if you are doing neuter and return, then dump dogs that are neutered out of the city to die there  a terrible slow death.
We believed him when Mayor Yucel Celikbilek said “ Animals are entrusted on us by God”.  He is  a religious man. We thought that since he had faith that God created all universe for men, he should  believe that this puts the responsibility of  protecting  all universe on men’s shoulder.  We were wrong.
The massacre in Hayirsizada in 1910 is not a historical incidence, it has been repeated since then over and over again. In 1910, all of about 80.000 animals in Istanbul,  dumped in the isolated island of Hayirsizada died by killing each other from hunger. The inhabitants of Istanbul believed that the Balkan War that fallowed was a catastrophe that was a result of this cruelty done to animals. But the animal massacre has continued ever since, and is still continuing now.
This massacre will continue until the sentient people of this city understand that keeping silent is to comply with the crime and   raise their voices for these innocent souls. We hope this day is not very far.

Luuk Adında Bir Köpek-A Dog Named Luuk

A Dog Named Luuk

The dog in the picture is one of the thousands that are dumped out of the city by municipalities. They turned out to be like this from hunger and thirst. We found this, whom we named Luuk, in one of the dump areas of municipalities. He was lying still like dead.  He was a huge Kangal, all his fur lost, his bones protruding out. We took him to SHKD shelter and started treatment.

This horrible journey starts with one person in the neighborhood calling the municipality. The teams come and take the animal. He is either neutered and sometimes not and dumped out of the city, in forests, highways, whichever is easier for the teams to reach. Fear, panic, natural instinct to go back home. This horror ends if a car or truck hits him on the highway. Otherwise it continues with hunger, thirst, misery, disease. This is the worst form of massacre. It is a prolonged death. Nobody cares. The person who has called up the municipality asking for the dog to be taken from his neighborhood is not curious about where the dog is taken. The municipality teams don’t bother about the dog they dumped in a place where he doesn’t have any chance to find food or water. Everybody is back to his work. Life goes on like nothing has happened.

Cassie'nin Hikayesi - Cassie's Story

Cassie SHKD barınağında çalışan Hüseyin'in evinin bulunduğu sokakta doğmuş.

Iyi bakarlar diye verdik. Altı ay sonra geri getirdiler. Sebep: küçük kıza sürtünüp yere düşürüyormuş. Hüseyin anlattı, geri getirdiklerinde arabadan bir türlü inmek istememiş, kadın çekiştirerek zorla indirmiş.

Hollanda icin sahiplendirme listesine koyduk onu.

Gecen hafta  Cassie'yi evinde ziyaret ettim.

CASSIE'S STORY

Cassie was born in the street where one of SHKD workers, Huseyin  lives. He was  adopted by a carpenter who had a shop at the same street. The man didn't take him home but  looked after him at his shop. He was like the man's assistant, going to every job appointment together with him by his car. Then the carpenter had cancer and he had one leg amputated and he couldn't come to the shop any more and soon he died. The sons took over the job but completely neglected Cassie, his name being Metis then.

Huseyin was sorry for Metis and took him to SHKD shelter. He was one of the dogs that lived in the free area, so had maximum human contact. He was very good with humans. He had an interesting habit of getting in any car that came to the shelter. It was difficult to get him off again.

Then one day a lady and her small girl came to the shelter to adopt a dog. They chose Cassie.  They were a rich family and it was very rare for a family to come and adopt a dog from a shelter in Turkey. We gave him to this family hoping him to have a good life.  They brought Cassie back after six months. The reason was that he was rubbing himself against the little girl and making her fall. Cassie didn't want to get off the car, the woman had to drag him out.

We put Cassie on the rehoming list for Holland. He was adopted in a short time. It was interesting that his new owner was also a carpenter.

I visited Cassie at his home last week. The new owner was taking Cassie together   with him to work  like his first owner did. They were driving to France often. He said that Cassie's attraction towards cars continue. He left the door of his van open in the garden for him to get in and sit whenever he wanted.

Cassie couldn't recognize me at first. Then I called him by the name his first owner called him, I said" Metis". He was very excited. He  remembered.

Bir İnsan Dünyayı Değiştirebilir- One Man Can Change the World

Bir İnsan Dünyayı Değiştirebilir

Ömer Atış’la on yl SHKD’de birlikte çalıştık.

Muduru Salih Özdemir’i, Veteriner Vedat Duman’ı, emeği geçen herkesi kutluyoruz.

One Man Can Change The World

We worked with Ömer Atış for ten years at SHKD. We helped numerous animals together. We organized neutering campaigns to many cities in Anatolia. Omer is in Tatvan now, working for Tatvan municipality. His place will never be replaced for us but as we see the change he has initiated in Eastern Turkey, we are proud of him.
After Ömer started working for Tatvan Municipality, the Dutch animal protection organization Actiezwerfhonden sponsored all the equipment necessary to furbish a clinic at the municipality. And Tatvan municipality which had not been doing neutering before,  launched a neuter and return program and  started feeding stray animals in and around the city.

There are many army stations on the Eastern border of Turkey. Dogs that are not welcome on streets of Eastern Turkey find shelter at these stations where they accompany soldiers in the long and lonely days they spend for their obligatory military service. Dr Damla Sahin and Omer launched a very important campaign for the neutering and vaccination of dogs at border army stations. 80 dogs were neutered and 50 already neutered dogs were vaccinated in 29 border stations they visited.

This reminded us of the hadith about Prophet Mohammed changing the route of his army of 10.000 soldiers not to harm the newly born puppies and mother dog on their way.

We congratulate Tatvan and Bitlis Municipalities which supported this project, Manager of Forest Salih Ozdemir who allocated a vehical, Vet. Vedat Duman and everybody who gave a hand. And we thank  dear Damla and Omer who has shown us that when a man truly believes in change,  nothing can prevent him from  launching it.

ANIMALS OF GEZI

The environmentalist  resistance movement which started  by protesting the cutting of hundred years old trees at Gezi Park was subject to a violent police intervention with use of tear gas and water containing a chemical that caused minor burn on the skin.   AS a result, the protest movement  spread  to many districts of Istanbul as well as other cities such as Ankara and Izmir.  Obviously stray animals  living on streets were also terribly affected by the police’s excessive and  disproportional use of tear gas and chemical water. Many veterinary clinics made announcements on twitter that they were ready to cure  injured strays.  Most activists helped animals that were wounded or had difficulty breathing because of the excessive use of gas. They tried to evacuate them from the areas where clashes took place.  Nevertheless,   hundreds of birds, tens of dogs and cats are estimated to be dead  only in Istanbul, let alone the other cities where the severity of the use of gas was not less.

It was not a new phenomenon that the homeless souls of the city was the ones that were most effected by any disaster but this was the first time that there was a new young generation that tried to rescue them as they tried to save their own selves. Gezi movement was a indicating the opening of a new era on this context too.

Cunda'da Kısırlaştırma- Neutering Campaign in Cunda

Neutering Campaign in Cunda

Nesrin Citirik called us for help about one year ago. They were in Cunda Ayvalık for Haytap Anatolian Tour and found out that in Cunda there were more cats in the streets than they had ever seen anywhere. As a result of the struggle of two women who were also Haytap representatives,  Ayvalık Municipality had given up poisoning cats but since they weren’t   doing any neutering, the number of cats in the small island had boomed to reach about 500. She asked if SHKD team can go there in Spring for neutering. We immediately applied to Actiezwerfhonden for support. They accepted to sponsor all the expenditures as they had done for many of our neutering campaigns before.  Haytap representatives mobilized  people in the city for catching and provided a place for operations. SHKD team of Vet. Murat Bekhan, Vet technician Omer Atış and Huseyin Basaran set off for the campaign.

The team worked full time for two days, 21-22 March, 2013. They neutered 60 dogs and 103 cats. They worked from 10 AM  to 9 PM without giving a break. Because of the lack of post operative space they had to stop in the second day. They left Vet Seher Tuna from Ayvalık Municipality material and equipment for operation of 50 more animals which she promised to do.

Another successful campaign was competed this way. If Haytap representatives didn’t make the necessary preparations, if SHKD team was not so dedicated as to go to every call for help voluntarily,  if Actiezwerfhonden was not so  determined to give support to neutering efforts and if its donators in Holland didn’t want animals in Turkey to be neutered so that they won’t be killed,  this campaign wouldn’t have been realized.

We are grateful to all.

Yunus parkında işkence-Torture in Dophinarium

Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Kadir Topbaş’in söz verdiği halde kapatmadığı Aqua Club Dolphin Park’in ruhsatinin iptal edilmesi için bir imza ver.

Her hayvanın türüne özgü koşullarda yaşama hakkı vardır.

Please sign the petition for the licence given to Aqua Club Dophin Park to be canceled by Istanbul Mayor Mr Kadir Topbas who has promised to do so long ago and didn’t.
Please  help rescue Dophin ILYA and the sea lion who are under severe torture at the Aqua Club Dophin Park

Dear Mr. Topbaş,

The captive dolphin ILYA and sea lion are in dire straits and subject to a terrible torture at Aqua Club Dolphin Park in Istanbul.

Dolphin ILYA is kept in a small glass tank near barrels full of acidic chlorine solution which is very poisonous for human and animal health.  ILYA stays in the polluted water of the tank, half fainted and motionless having lost all life instincts. There are many cracks on the glass of the tank and the leakage of water is blocked by a temporary plastic patch.  The tank is about to explode any moment. When this happens ILYA will suffocate painfully on broken pieces of glass. The staff which is only there during show time is completely indifferent about this risk.
Dolphins are social animals that live with their families. They swim about 65-85 km every day in their wild and free life. It is a great torture to keep ILYA in such a small tank all alone. Likewise, the sea lion is also alone in a small cage. He is only allowed out during show. These animals are also subject to all kinds of torture including beating while they are “trained” to entertain people.

Animals are not for entertaining humans. They have the right to live a life appropriate for their species.

Dear Mr. Topbas,

Please do as you promised and cancel the license given to Aqua Club Dolphin Park immediately to end the torture the dolphin ILYA and sea lion are subject to.

Kind regards,

Yunusun icinde bulundugu tank her an patlamaya hazır.

Cruelity at Dolphinarium

We have received the mail below about the “Aqua Club Dophinarium” in Istanbul. It tells about a dolphin and a sea lion captive in a polluted water tank with glass panes about to burst any minute.  Everybody that visits this place is actually supporting this mentality that sees animals as entertainment objects for humans.

On the other hand Turkey’s animal protection law says that wild animals should not be separated from their habitats, animals that live freely in nature should not be caught and deprived of their freedom. It says that it is essential that all animals have the right to be kept and fed and sheltered in conditions characteristic for their species.

The law and practice are in complete contradiction. And animals are victim of   this insensitivity and irresponsibility.

“Dolphin "ILYA" - in Istanbul is in dire straits - the dolphinarium is ready to burst! Online- Action

We visited the dolphinarium "Acquaclub-Dolphin-Park" in Istanbul on January 12th 2013 and found that a captive dolphin and a sea lion were living in the most horrible of conditions.

Immediately next to the bleachers ere can of caustic chlorine, which is very poisonous for man and animal. A sole dolphin is lethargically swimming around in a small, polluted concrete-glass tank, which is about to burst any minute. There are several cracks in the glass panes of the enclosure and at one corner there is only a plastic sheet holding the water back. If the glass should crack, then the dolphin will be lying in the middle of glass pieces on dry land and could die under horrible conditions! There is no supervision or any personnel in this facility and the people that work in this dolphinarium are only present during show times. Our complaint about the danger of the bursting glass panes was not taken seriously by the personnel and replied that the cracks will probably hold out for a little while longer, which we are doubting very much, though.

"ILYA" is all alone in this tank!

The sea lion is also the only one there and is only allowed out of his tiny cage during show-time.

This is cruelty to animal at its utmost, which is happening there!

Regards

Stop the death sentence against community dogs in Turkey

Help Turkish animal protectionists stop the government death plan to remove, poison or starve community street dogs

For several years, animal protectionists in Turkey have made progress for street animals by successfully introducing humane alteration and rabies vaccination for street animals. Most communities have embraced the compassionate treatment of street animals, as a result of humane education and increasing awareness of the benefits of alteration and vaccination, instead of poisoning and other brutal methods of killing. But, the Turkish government has been slow to understand that spay/neuter and vaccination is the most effective and kindest way to control overpopulation. It has not provided adequate veterinary training or implemented basic anti-cruelty laws. Now, instead of continuing to progress, the government wants to return to the old brutal methods of capturing stray dogs, poisoning them, or starving them to death by shipping them to remote places where dogs cannot survive.

The local government “shelters” in Turkey are death camps where dogs are allowed to starve or suffer mistreatment by untrained staff. Evidence of the horrific conditions at municipal shelters has been well-documented by investigations. Most Turkish municipalities have no budget for veterinary services, have no trained staff, and have no plans for the actual care of animals. In reality, the government plan to deport street dogs to a “natural life park,” is a cruel hoax; in reality, there are no “natural life parks.” The real plan is that the government will dump the dogs in remote places where they will die. The real plan, as it has been done in the past, is that the street dogs who are comfortable with people – the most gentle, well-socialized, and trusting animals – will be taken by public workers and poisoned or dumped, or both. The friendliest dogs, who have experienced the kindness of local residents who feed them, and care for them as part of the community, will be the easiest targets of this cruel deception.

The kind people of Turkey who understand what this means – an unnecessary and cruel death sentence for hundreds of thousands of street dogs – will organize and march in protest.
Please help stand up for the protection of stray animals by petitioning against this misguided decision by the government.Stop the death sentence against community dogs in Turkey.
