Impossible is nothing

European Commission Vise President Gunter Verheugen and his wife Visited the Exemplary Animal Rehabilitation Center Established by Orhangazi Municipality in Bursa.

European Commission Vise President Gunter Verheugen, his wife and the president of the German Animal Protection Association Pro Animale, Ms. Wothke visited the Stray Animals Natural Living and Medical Treatment Center established in a forest area of 114.000 sq meters and to serve 4000 stray animals in one year.

This exemplary project has been possible thanks to the cooperation between Orhangazi municipality, Bursa Animal Protection Association, Uludağ University and Pro Animale with the purpose to create a medical centre to treat, neuter and vaccinate stray animals, releasing them to their territory shortly thereafter. The center is a first in Turkey, a true example with facilities, scope and services unique in the country. The center has, in addition to the fully equipped clinics, an auditorium to be used as education center for school children.

Mr Verheugen, in the press conference he gave, after visiting the center, expressed his gratitude to all that have made this project come true and emphasized his wish that this center be an example to be followed by all the other municipalities in Turkey.

Mr. and Mrs. Verheugen adopted a mixed dog during their visit and named her Nili Verheugen and expressed that the dog will be a member of their family from now on.

We congratulate and express our gratitude to all those that have cooperated in making this remarkable project, especially, the major of Orhangazi, Mr. Recep Altepe, The head of veterinary department Mr. Tekin Akış, Prof Dr. Nilufer Aytuğ from Uludağ University, Ms. Zehra Celikol the president of Bursa Animal Protection Organisation and Ms. Johanna Wothke president of Pro Animale.

We hope that this outstanding achievement of the Orhangazi municipality will be an example for the Istanbul municipality and shows the authorities the urgent need to stop the appalling execution of Neuter and release in Istanbul and the criminal actions and atrocities against animals at the hands of Arif Eker, the Head of the Veterinary Department of the Istanbul Municipality, widely reported by media and ourselves lately. We hope this example will show the Mayor of Istanbul the necessity to replace Arif Eker, the biggest obstacle to animal welfare in this country and place in his position a responsible bureaucrat willing to put into practice a civilized and humane solution to the stray dogs problem in cooperation with NGO’s.

Avrupa Komisyonu Başkan Yardımcısı Sayın Gunter Verheugen ve Eşi Bursa Osmangazi Belediyesinin Kurduğu Örnek Hayvan Rehabilitasyon Merkezini Ziyaret Etti

Bursa Osmangazi Belediyesinin, 114 dönüm ormanlık arazi üzerinde kurduğu, yılda 4000 sokak hayvanına hizmet vermeyi hedefleyen Sahipsiz Hayvanlar Doğal Yaşam ve Tedavi Merkezi, Avrupa Komisyonu Başkan Yardımcısı Gunter Verheugen, eşi ve Alman Hayvan Koruma Örgütü Pro Animale başkanı tarafından ziyaret edildi.

Osmangazi Belediyesi’nin, Bursa Hayvanları Koruma Derneği ve Uludağ Üniversitesi ile işbirliği içinde ve Pro Animale derneğinin desteği ile gerçekleştirdiği bu örnek merkezde, sokak hayvanlarının tedavi edilip, kısırlaştırılıp aşılandıktan sonra alındığı yere geri bırakılması hedeflenmektedir. Merkez, tesisleri ile kapsam ve hizmet olarak sadece Türkiye’de değil, dünyada da bir ilk olma özelliğine sahiptir. Tesiste, tam donanımlı kliniklerin yanı sıra, ilköğretim öğrencilerine eğitim hizmeti vermek üzere bir konferans salonu da bulunmaktadır.

Sayın Gunter Verheugen yaptığı basın toplantısında bu girişimi hayata geçirilmesi için emeği geçen herkesi kutlamış ve sokak hayvanı sorununun çözümü için başlatılan bu örnek uygulamanın Türkiye’nin diğer illerindeki belediyeler için de örnek teşkil etmesini temenni ettiğini vurgulamıştır.

Bay ve Bayan Verheugen merkezi ziyaretleri sırasında melez bir köpeği sahiplenerek Nili Verheugen adını vermişler ve bundan böyle Nili’nin onlarin ailelerinin bir üyesi olduğunu söylemişlerdir.

Biz de, sokak hayvanlarının hayvanların kısırlaştırılp aşılandıktan sonra yerine bırakılması projesini uygulamak için hayata geçirilmiş olan bu örnek merkezin kuruluşunda emeği geçen herkesi, başta Orhangazi Belediye Başkanı Sayın Recep Altepe, Veteriner İşleri Müdürü Sayın Tekin Akış, Uludağ Üniversitesi Öğretim Üyesi Sayın Nilüfer Aytuğ, Bursa Hayvanları Koruma Derneği Başkanı Sayın Zehra Çelikok, Pro Animale başkanı Sayın Wothke olmak üzere yürekten kutluyoruz.

Orhangazi Belediyesinin bu girişiminin Istanbul için de bir örnek teşkil etmesini, Istanbul’daki utanç verici uygulamaya bir son verilerek benzer bir çalışmanın başlatılabilmesi için mevcut uygulamanın mimarı veteriner işleri müdürü Arif Eker’in görevinden alınarak, yerine Orhangazi’deki gibi soruna uygar ve insani çözümden yana, sivil toplum örgütleriyle işbirliğine açık bir kişinin göreve getirilmesini talep ediyoruz.
